BACKGROUND <\/strong>Osteopathy is adivised in the prevention and treatment of sport injuries, and it has recently been included as a medical choice for athlete care in the polyclinics at the olympic villages in London in 2012 and in Rio in 2016, but no study has yet defined its real use to this day. OBJECTIVE <\/strong>This leterature revision has two main objectives: a)<\/em> to summarise the studies on the osteopathic practice in a population where sport is practiced, b)<\/em> to supply the type of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) administered for each single clinical condition. METHOD <\/strong>From December 2017 to February 2018 we searched data banks such as PubMed, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, <\/em>Clinical Trial.Gov,<\/em> Trip Data Base, OsteomedDr, <\/em>Osteopathic Research Web, <\/em>Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, American Journal of Sports Medicine, BMC Sports Science Medicine and Rehabilitation, British Journal of Sports Medicine, Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine. RESULTS <\/strong>Overall, 78 abstracts were identified. Of the 26 suited for analysis (5) were randomized controlled trials, (3) cohort studies, (12) case reports, (1) expert opinion, (5) had no stated study design. DISCUSSION <\/strong>The main result register the OMT or the single osteopathic manipulative tecniques administered in 1441 recreational and professional athletes: golf (1101;[75%]), athletics (126;[9%]), football (116;[8%]), soccer (63;[5%]), baseball (35;[2%]). Osteopathic manipulative techniques improve the gleno-humeral internal rotation, the hamstring extensibility, the outcomes of chronic ankle instability and chronic epicondylitis. The OMT is found in improving athletic performances in football and in endurance running in order to decrease stress-induced fractures, but, in spite of the mounting amount of research, the outcomes are not conclusive yet, due to a lack of studies which are methodologically rigorous and more substantial in size. CONCLUSION <\/strong>Based on this revision the OMT or the single osteopathic manipulation techniques represent a type of intervention more and more frequently used in treating sport injuries, but further studies are necessary in order to support its clinical efficacy.<\/p>\n

Abstract<\/strong><\/h3>\n

INTRODUCTION <\/strong>The purpose of this study was to quantify the types of research articles published in professional journals of Osteopathy with international circulation. METHODS <\/strong>A quantitative analysis was carried out on articles selected from four journals over a period of five years, classified on the basis of the study design. The univariate (ANOVA) analysis was used to investigate the mean differences in terms of number of types of article within the different journals and over the years. RESULTS <\/strong>A final number of 478 articles were included in the study. In particular, (no. = 17; 3.55%) were Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) and (no. = 5; 1.04%) were Controlled Clinical Trials. The articles published more frequently were classified as Clinical practice (no. = 172; 35.98%), followed by Case Reports\/Case Series <10 subjects (no. = 68; 14.22%), Narrative Reviews (no. = 61; 12.76%), Cohort Studies (no. = 33; 6.90%), Validation studies (no. = 23; 4.81%), and Clinical Trials >10 subjects (no. = 16; 3.34%). Systematic Reviews were published very rarely (no. = 7; 1.46%), followed by (no. = 1; 0.20%) Case-Control Study. No Meta-Analysis was published. The remaining (no. = 75; 15,69) articles were classified as Others. DISCUSSION <\/strong>This study shows that the methodological quality of journals specifically dealing with Osteopathy is equal to the standards observed in other areas of Medicine. CONCLUSION <\/strong>The distribution of the types of articles in the present sample of journals is not similar to that of other scientific journals, with the exception of Observational\/descriptive study designs<\/p>\n
